KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An Independence police officer shot a woman after a car chase in Kansas City.

Independence police said the suspect was driving what appeared to be a stolen car and bolted from a traffic stop at 5:15 a.m. Saturday morning. A chased ensued until the woman backed up on the Interstate 435 northbound ramp and rammed the police car.

Police say the officer left the vehicle and the woman backed up again. The Kansas City Star reports the officer fired at the woman, striking her in the head.

Kansas City Police Capt. Rich Lockhart said the woman's injuries are not life-threatening.

The officer was not injured.

Detectives from Kansas City and Independence are investigating.
