Charles E. Depauw of Cape Girardeau was charged with attempted burglary, property damage, receiving stolen property, burglary, tampering with a motor vehicle and assault. His bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety.

On Sunday Scott City police responded to the 800 block of Fifth Street East for a report of a suspicious vehicle at a vacant home. When officers arrived, they found a pickup truck next to it.

Officers attempted to find the owner of the vehicle, when they saw Depauw flee on foot. After entering the home, officers found a second suspect, Tanner, hiding inside. He was taken into custody.

While on scene, officers were dispatched to another burglary in progress in the 600 block of East Chestnut Street in Scott City.

When they arrived, a witness identified Depauw, who attempted to break into their house. When confronted, Depauw ran away. Officers canvassed the area but could not find him.

Eventually, officers received a call that Depauw was hiding in a pool near a residence in the 700 block of Seventh Street East. Officers arrived on scene and took him into custody.

After searching the residence on Fifth Street East, officers discovered a change dispenser with a large amount of change and cash. It was later discovered that the machine was stolen from a Laundromat in Jackson.

Numerous other stolen items also were recovered from the pickup truck that was on scene. Neither men owned the truck.
