Meagan Fornkahl, a student at Hawkins Junior High School in Jackson, and Jessica Bailey, a student at Scott City, were among 21 students from Missouri selected to attend the 1996 Primary Care Resource Initiative for Missouri and the Missouri Rural Area Health Education Centers Chemistry and Physics Academy.
The academy is designed to encourage students to pursue careers in primary health care. Students were selected through a competitive application process.
During the three-week academy, students spend 60 hours learning chemistry and physics fundamentals and had two opportunities to accompany health-care professionals to learn about career opportunities. They also learned basic research and debate skills while developing a group project presented to parents and guests during the closing ceremony.
