DOE RUN, Mo. (AP) -- An 8-year-old eastern Missouri boy is recovering after he was severely bitten by the family's dog.
Relatives say Brock McLeod of Doe Run had large wounds to his legs, arm and upper chest, and was hospitalized after the weekend attack. He has since been released.
Amy McLeod says her son tried to pet the German shepherd when walking to a cousin's house just behind their own.
Her 6-year-old daughter came inside telling her the dog, Ranger, was "getting Brock." The mother says she struck the dog several times with a baseball bat to get him off her son.
Her father-in-law shot the dog because the family decided they could not guarantee the animal wouldn't attack again.
