Jackson firefighters spent more than three hours Tuesday night battling a blaze off Farmington Road that destroyed the home of John and Barbara Lewis.
The house fire, which occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, was a total loss.
By 8:15 p.m., the flames engulfing the house could be seen from Lexington and Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.
John Lewis, the homeowner, said he had been doing some soldering work on his deck in the back of the house, unplugging everything when he finished.
He went downstairs, he said, and 10 minutes later heard his wife, Barbara, yelling. When he came back upstairs, the deck was engulfed in flames.
He and his wife were the only ones home at the time, and both escaped without injuries.
"The good news is no one was hurt, we are insured, we have a church taking care of us," Lewis said.
The Jackson Police Department, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, and Fruitland Fire Department assisted Jackson fire at the scene, according to Jackson officer Jordan Heisserer.
Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to the mutual aid request to man the Jackson fire station while everyone was out at the blaze.
