A driver crashed into a Cape Girardeau grocery store Friday morning, but both she and the building were in good enough shape to keep shopping after the accident, police reported.

About 9:30 a.m., Cape Girardeau police received a call about a crash at Aldi, 2145 Independence St., public information officer Darin Hickey said.

The driver, an 81-year-old woman from Cape Girardeau, told police she mistook the gas pedal for the brake, Hickey said.

After striking the building, the driver went inside the store, where employees found her shopping and talked to her about the accident before calling police, he said.

No one was hurt in the crash, which caused minor damage to the car -- a Mercury Grand Marquis -- and cosmetic exterior damage to the building, Hickey said.

Because the crash occurred on private property, officers still are investigating what charges, if any, could apply, he said.
