CREAL SPRINGS, Ill. -- A Dexter, Mo., man whose son was killed in a weekend boating accident on Lake of Egypt has been released from a hospital.
Robert T. Maddox, 47, the driver of one of two boats that crashed at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, was released Monday from Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Killed in the accident was his son, Robbie Maddox, 14. A friend of the family, James Lawson, 56, was seriously injured.
Another of Maddox's sons, Chad Maddox, 10, was also a passenger. He was not injured.
Witnesses told Illinois Department of Natural Resources investigators that it appeared neither boater saw the other boat before they crashed near a marina.
Tim Schweizer of the DNR said that Lawson was in serious condition at Southeast Missouri Hospital. He was airlifted to the hospital following the accident.
The accident occurred while the lake was crowded with boaters participating in a fishing tournament. The Maddox boat was not part of the tournament.
Larson, of Ypsilanti, Mich, was vacationing in the area and had accompanied the Maddoxes on the fishing trip.
The Maddoxes and Lawson were riding in a 17-foot fishing boat, which was traveling north as it came out of a cove. It was involved in the accident with a 21-foot Stratus headed west and operated by Michael D. Goessman of Sesser, authorities said. Goessman was not injured.
Vickie Anderson, owner of a nearby marina, said there had not been an accident with injuries at Lake of Egypt in at least 10 years.
