CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Dana Corporation reported narrowing net income for 1990, particularly in the fourth quarter, compared to 1989 figures. The most recent fourth quarter income dropped to $4.1 million from the 1989 level of $20.7 million.

Total sales for the company remained relatively stable, with $4.95 billion for the year, a 2 percent increase. The company attributes a $25 million after-tax special charge for the lower income figure.

The board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 40 cents per share payable March 15.

The company said production of cars and trucks in North America is at its lowest level since the 1982 recession. "We believe light and heavy truck output in 1991 could be down substantially, depending on the duration of the Persian Gulf War and its effect on the economy," said Southwood Morcott, Dana's Chairman and CEO.

The company is transitioning to emphasize more of a global focus, targeting expansion in many countries, as a means to attain a goal of least half of its total sales outside the U.S.

Dana Corporation recently opened a Spicer Axle Division plant in Cape Girardeau in the Six-Thirty Industrial Park. The $23 million facility produces components for light duty trucks. It will eventually hire 200 workers.
