Progressive Club

Progressive Club met on Tuesday with 12 members and three guests present. Members met at the home of Shirley Cracraft and carpooled to the destination: the home of Wanda Kirkpatrick. They toured her yard, gardens, and the animal life: wild rabbits, tame mallards, and her five Rhode Island Red hens. Kirkpatrick has converted her in-ground pool into a water lily pond with koi and yellow water iris.

After that the group journeyed on to the home of Jan Kelly to tour her yard, have a brief business meeting, and enjoy refreshments on her breezeway.

The business meeting was opened with "The Lord's Prayer."

Jean Dudley, secretary, read the minutes for February. The April meeting was canceled because of heavy rain.

Elvia Percival, treasurer, reported that there is a balance of $415.93 in the club's account and collected dues from those that were not at last meeting.

Joann Adams, president, encouraged members to donate items for Joplin tornado relief.

Next meeting is June 28 when the group will tour the Alpaca Ranch at Tower Rock. Cape Girardeau members will meet at Steak 'N Shake to car pool to Bavarian Halle where they will meet up with the members from Gordonville. The group needs to be at the Ranch by 5 p.m., so members need to leave Fruitland by 4 p.m. Guests are welcome to come along.

A reminder to let Percival know if anyone is going in for surgery, is sick, etc. so she can send a card.

Ellen Lorberg announced that at 6 p.m. June 26 there will be a fundraiser for Water Wells for Africa at the band shell in Jackson City Park. There will be singing groups and The Southern Brothers will be featured. A donation will be taken up.

Lamplighters FCE

Lamplighters FCE held their May 19 meeting in the home of Gayla Volz. Karen McLane, president, called the meeting to order. The hostess gave a devotional titled "It's You." Roll call was answered by members showing an example of Norman Rockwell's work.

After the approval of the minutes and the treasurer's report, updates were given.

Verla Mangels and McLane shared information from the spring district meeting held in Sedgewickville on April 26, including the fact that Lamplighters' member Jo Ann Hahs had been elected to finish the term as the director of Southeast District and chair for Home and Community Environment.

Baked items and plants were "hot" sellers at the Oak Ridge Garage Sale on April 30. Four members, Sharon Bogenpohl, Linda Sebaugh, Volz and Hahs, participated in the May 9 workday that produced 13 weighted blankets, seven lap pads, and seven shoulder snakes for "Love Given by the Pound" project for TouchPoint Autism Center.

Six members, Teresa Hinkebein, Jackie Kurre, Bogenpohl, Mangels, McLane, and Sebaugh and a guest, Betty Hahs, attended the Conservation Cafe with Dave Walker at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center on May 10.

Six members, Linda Freeman, Bogenpohl, Kurre, Mangels, Sebaugh, and JoAnn Hahs read and donated books to the Oak Ridge Elementary classes in May.

Thirty-three "Books for New Born" were delivered to the hospitals in Cape Girardeau in honor of May 15 Day of the Family.

Members will read three times to the preschool to fifth-grade students attending Summer Camp at the Oak Ridge School. Sebaugh, McLane, and Hahs are scheduled to attend the June 2 FCE Council meeting at the Cape Girardeau County Extension Center. Roberta Allen, Karen Eakers, Freeman, and Sebaugh are responsible for planning the Granddaughter's Day to be held this summer.

June dates to remember are: June 13, last workday for "Love given by the pound" Weighted Project for the TouchPoint Autism Center; June 17, Members are to meet at 9 a.m. at the First Baptist Church parking lot in Oak Ridge for the Lamplighters' Trip to Ava-Campbell Hill, Ill., and the annual birthday party.

A program on calcium and vitamin D was presented by Mangels, and Roberta Allen shared information about Norman Rockwell. Then she showed her favorite pictures, as well as two books about his life and 322 paintings.
