CAIRO, Ill. -- A 13-year-old Cairo youth was struck and killed by a drunk driver while on a school trip to Washington D.C.

Dustin Keith McAdoo was crossing a street near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., U.S. Park Police said. He died about 11 p.m. Tuesday at Washington Hospital Center.

He was a member of a school group which was on an educational trip to Washington.

He was a 7th grade student at Cairo Camelot School. He was the son of Mary Sue McAdoo Johnson of Cairo, and Jerry Ray Casper of Mounds.

Officers said the boy was trying to cross the street against the light Tuesday night. He was flown by helicopter to the Washington Hospital Center, where he died about five hours after the accident.

The 55-year-old driver, whose name was unavailable, registered a .12 blood-alcohol level, enough to qualify him as driving while intoxicated. Police said the man was released on his own recognizance.
