FISK, Mo. -- Two Butler County deputies escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon when a Broseley, Missouri, man allegedly attempted to strike them with his truck after a high-speed chase, which ended near a river slough and led to a foot pursuit.

"We had a pursuit with [Sammie Loyal Redmon] approximately a week ago on a county road; we ended up losing him," Butler County Lt. Charles Phelps said. "He's wanted on several warrants and has charges pending in Stoddard County."

At about 2:45 p.m., deputy Travis Huddleston reportedly was attempting to find the 39-year-old when he saw Redmon's black Chevrolet truck northbound on Route CC near Route FF.

Huddleston said he attempted to make a traffic stop, but Redmon sped away and exceeded 80 mph as Huddleston pursued with his lights and sirens on, according to Huddleston's report.

County Road 640 came to a dead end at a levee, and Huddleston and other deputies, were unable to follow in their patrol cars because of the condition of the levee road, the report said.

Huddleston and Sgt. Wade Dare continued on the levee road in a four-wheel-drive truck, and found Redmon sitting in his truck in a wooded area off the road, according to the report. When Redmon was ordered out of the truck, "He began backing up toward the levee, like he was going to go over the next levee," Huddleston said.

As Redmon allegedly was backing his truck, which was covered in mud, Huddleston said, he couldn't clearly see inside.

Seeing what appeared to be a black object inside and Redmon reaching, "I knocked the window out with my baton. I saw he didn't have the gun" as originally thought, Huddleston said.

After backing up, Huddleston said, Redmon then moved his truck forward.

"That's when he struck me," Huddleston said.

After Redmon allegedly struck Huddleston and attempted to strike Dare, "I pulled my weapon and ordered him out of the vehicle," Huddleston said. "Then, he struck Sgt. Dare's truck [and] drove off the levee.

" ... He fled to another field road, where he abandoned the truck and fled on foot."

Additional deputies, as well as officers from the Poplar Bluff Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers from Butler and Stoddard counties, responded to assist in the search of what Phelps described as being largely wooded and fields.

Redmon was apprehended about 4:15 p.m.

"He was sitting at the edge of a slough [just west of the St. Francis River]," Huddleston said. "When [officers] came upon him, he jumped in to swim across."

Redmon was pulled from the water and arrested on suspicion of two counts of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, driving while revoked/suspended, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, first-degree property damage and possession of a controlled substance and a warrant for driving while revoked/suspended and two failure-to-appear warrants for driving while revoked/suspended and passing a bad check.
