JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster says if you get a text telling you that you've won something and you haven't entered a contest ... delete the text. Koster says the latest fad in consumer scams is call "smishing."

The scam text messages ask the consumer to click a link to claim their prize. Unfortunately, when the consumer clicks the link, the cell phone is automatically infected with malware that allows identity thieves access to personal information, such as social security numbers and bank information.

Koster says the phone doesn't become infected unless the link is opened. He says the scams usually involve the giving of a gift card.
