Alma Schrader Elementary School no longer is an orphan the school will be "adopted" next month by Capital Bank of Cape Girardeau as part of the district's Adopt-a-School program.

Alma Schrader Principal David Giles said a formal adoption ceremony is planned Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at the school.

Peggy Landewee, vice president at Capital Bank, said she read a newspaper article about the Adopt-a-School program, which mentioned that Alma Schrader and Central High School did not have partners. She decided this was a program in which Capital Bank should participate.

"They sounded kind of lonely. I felt it would be fun to work with the children and to get some of our employees involved," Landewee said.

"I think it also helps the children to realize what is happening in their community. We can let them know what banking is all about, which might help them with their future."

Principal David Giles said Landewee contacted him to see if the school still needed a partner. "I said we are certainly orphaned and referred her to our central office."

Giles said Richard Bollwerk, director of elementary education, notified him Monday that plans were final for the adoption.

Giles and Landewee have not yet discussed plans for future programs, but the principal said his students would be available to Christmas carol at the bank facility.

"In the past, some of our adopters have taken an active role in play-day field events," Giles said. "They have provided treats for students.

"We also get to draw upon fresh perspectives. Kids are anxious to hear that."

"The partnership with a school and a business results in benefits for the children," Giles said.
