Five weeks after an apparent murder-suicide on West Mary Street in Jackson left three dead and two wounded, Meghan Moshiri, the 2-year-old victim of the shooting, remains hospitalized in St. Louis with severe injuries, according to Roberta Knights, her grandmother.
Meghan suffered a gunshot wound to the head, inflicted by her father, Mir Shahin Moshiri, who also shot his wife Katherine, stepson Michael Jeffers, and 4-year-old daughter Madison before turning the weapon on himself, police say.
Katherine Moshiri was hospitalized and released later that week. Mir Shahin and Madison Moshiri were found at the scene, both dead of single gunshot wounds to the head, and Jeffers died Dec. 4 at an area hospital.
Police are still awaiting lab results of tests, such as gunshot residue analysis, performed at the scene, before officially closing the investigation, but there are no new developments, said Lt. Rodney Barnes, spokesman for the police department.
Meghan Moshiri continues to do as well as can be expected, though infections complicated her progress, Knights said.
"It's day to day," she said.
As far as her daughter healing from the ordeal, Knights said everything hinges on Meghan's recovery.
"She's not isolated, she has a lot of support," she said.
A Moshiri family fund established at Bank of America now has $8,800 to help the family, said Paula Mayfield, who is in charge of managing contributions.
None of the money has been used, Mayfield said.
Jeffers' classmates from Jackson High School helped collect about $1,700 earlier this month, Mayfield said.
