LETTERS: YES, THERE ARE ANGELS AMONG US

To the editor:

There really are angels among us. We discovered this on Presidents Day on Independence Street as we were endeavoring to get to Southeast Missouri Hospital for an appointment. The rain was heavy, and so was traffic and our spirit. Our car had just quit on us. We are in our 70s and unable to walk any distance for help.

In minutes a gentleman was at our window offering assistance. I had a cellular phone and was trying to get it plugged in. He said he would go find a phone book and left, rain dripping from his face.

Then I discovered our phone wouldn't work with a dead battery, and we were becoming more desperate.

That's when a lady appeared offering help. I gave her the phone number of our daughter at her workplace, and she too left in heavy rain.

The gentleman came back with the promised phone book, but it was no good without a phone.

Then the lady too made the second trip back and said help would be there shortly.

The two angels left without leaving their names, but they know who they are, and so does God.

Help did arrive. My husband got to the hospital on time. The car was towed to a garage. We spent several hours at the mall while repairs were being made on our car. The staff at the hospital warmed my husband by offering dry blankets to stop the chill brought on by wet clothing.

All day was a day of goodwill toward us, and it will live on in our memory.

Every time I awakened during the night, my thoughts went directly to those who restored our faith in people, and I offered a little prayer that they too would be blessed as we were.

I'm sure we will repeat the story many times in the future, because we are convinced that there really are angels among us. We don't always recognize them. They look just like ordinary folks. But there is nothing ordinary about them.

We are truly blessed.
