FREE EXPRESSION AND THE FLAG

Like support for community service, opposing a constitutional amendment outlawing desecration of the U.S. flag is a tough position to take. But it is the right one.

The U.S. Senate voted down the proposed amendment by a mere three votes. The House had already approved a broader amendment by an overwhelming majority.

While the desecration of the flag is abominable, the fact is there is no epidemic of such actions. And there are remedies for actions involving Old Glory that go beyond raising the ire of solid patriots.

The free expression of ideas and opinions is as sacred a concept as respect for the flag. The First Amendment has served the country well in that regard for more than 200 years. Adding a constitutional amendment to protect the flag against that freedom would leave the door ajar to other, more dangerous limits on government criticism.
