The announcement was exciting and long awaited. Notre Dame High School will relocate to a 40-acre site at Route K and Hitt Road, about two miles west of Interstate 55. Proponents now face the task of raising $5 million in private funds to build the 90,000-square-foot structure.

The project certainly received a boost up with the sizable donation of land from the James L. Drury and Wanda L. Drury Family Trust. It was a generous gift.

The high school draws from a large region in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. Its enrollment has grown a remarkable 47 percent since 1991, necessitating the expanded quarters.

Notre Dame High School has proved a real asset to Cape Girardeau and the region. Its educational successes will, no doubt, receive general support in the coming capital campaign.
