Efforts are continuing toward the establishment of a Boys and Girls Club in Cape Girardeau. This nationwide organization has operated highly successful programs in cities elsewhere with activities and guidance that produce good social skills and improved study habits among youths who may not be getting that support at home.

The first important step to getting a Boys and Girls Club here is to determine if a need really exists. Other efforts to offer such services have skimmed the surface. In all likelihood, a study of Cape Girardeau's needs will show the tried-and-true programs of a Boys and Girls Club would fill a big gap.

If so, the community will need to show its support. Such programs don't come without significant cost. And the community's financial commitment will be a key measurement of the desire to have the Boys and Girls Clubs of America come to town.
