Recommendations

Today the Southeast Missourian begins a four-part series looking at the recommendations made by the Missouri State Government Review Commission. The commission approved 84 recommendations to present to Gov. Matt Blunt from a list of 104 proposals it assembled after six public hearings around the state.

Blunt could adopt some of the recommendations by executive order. Others would require new law.

The first part of our series will examine the proposal to switch Missouri's budget process from an annual event to one that occurs every two years. On subsequent Sundays, other substantive recommendations will be discussed.

During more than seven months of work, the 20-member commission made a serious effort to propose structural changes that could improve state government. Now those recommendations deserve our serious consideration.
