LETTERS: DOUGLAS HERE IN 1965

To the editor:

The report in the Missourian that Clarence Thomas' address in Cape Girardeau marked "the first time in Southeast Missouri State University's 123-year history it has hosted a sitting Supreme Court justice" is in error.

Nov. 29, 1965, William O. Douglas, then a member of the court, lectured in Academic Hall Auditorium. As I recall, Justice Douglas' appearance here was at the invitation of the faculty and administration in the areas of history and social science. His lecture, if memory serves, argued for re-establishment of political and commercial ties with the Chinese government, a step later taken by the Nixon administration.
