LETTERS: PROTECTING PROPERTY IS BASIC RIGHT

To the editor:

This letter is in response to the question of pressing charges against the owner of the downtown store that was recently robbed. It is disturbing to note the displeasing attitude toward law-abiding citizens that our country has adopted.

Gun-possessing, law-abiding citizens are the only deterrent to violent crime. Nevertheless, taking away this element of surprise (removing guns from law-abiding citizens), lawbreakers (possessing illicit gun) will be more frequent in these less fortified homes and businesses.

As clear as I can see, the only thing this law-abiding citizen did wrong was to raise a gun in the air before firing. His wife and property were in harm's way. How would we look upon him had he not protected them? I commend the actions taken by the store owner.
