To the editor:

I'm writing in regard to your recent coverage concerning the EPA-commissioned study on emissions from the proposed Holnam cement plant in Lee Island near Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

After reviewing the study myself, I was pleased to see the report indicated that the proposed facility would not negatively impact the St. Louis region's ability to address ozone levels. As a strong supporter of this project, I consider this very good news.

I have long felt Holnam officials have been very straightforward with me, the community and other elected officials. I realize this study is just one of many components that will go into making a final decision, but this is encouraging news for Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis and Southeast Missouri.

I remain optimistic that our state regulatory officials at the Missouri Department of Natural Resources will take heed of this report's positive conclusions with regard to St. Louis as they work with Holnam during the permitting process. Our region and our state can benefit greatly from Holnam's proposed $600 million investment. It means jobs, economic development and an increased tax base from a company that has demonstrated its strong commitment to being a good corporate citizen.
