Constitution Day

Alma Schrader Elementary School students and staff first participated in Constitution Day at the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Now in its 12th year, school officials say students look forward to the uplifting festivities.

Last month, the assembly of students heard from special speakers and local officials and joined in song to celebrate Constitution Day. Among those participating were Southeast Missouri State history professor Adam Criblez, Cape Girardeau police chief Wes Blair and state Sen. Wayne Wallingford. With music from Jerry Ford and the school's music teacher Rebecca Gentry, the day was filled with opportunities to celebrate our country, its founding and the many today who serve in the military and local communities.

"So many men and women, not just police officers and firefighters, but people in the military and nurses, don't get the recognition they deserve," Blair said. "They're not glorified on television like rock stars or athletes. It's nice to see them be recognized, especially in front of such a young crowd."

Connecting community leaders with the students is a good opportunity for the youngsters to learn more about our local heroes and those who do important work every day that is not always recognized publicly.
