NEW YORK -- Mike Mussina kept Barry Bonds and San Francisco at bay, pitching the New York Yankees past the Giants 2-1 Friday night in the renewal of one of baseball's most storied rivalries.
The Yankees began interleague play by ending the Giants' four-game winning streak. The teams last played meaningful games against each other in the 1962 World Series.

CLEVELAND -- Roberto Alomar won in his return to Jacobs Field and Al Leiter, facing Cleveland for the first time since the 1997 World Series, pitched into the eighth as the New York Mets snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over the Indians.

DETROIT -- Scott Rolen went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a victory over the Detroit Tigers.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Ramon Vazquez hit a grand slam and Brian Lawrence allowed three runs in seven innings as the San Diego Padres snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Noteworthy
CUBS: Reliever Carlos Zambrano was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing the past four weeks with a strained right elbow. Zambrano takes the place of reliever Pat Mahomes, who was sent to Triple-A Iowa after the Cubs' game Wednesday in Milwaukee.
DEVIL RAYS: Minor-league pitcher Nick Bierbrodt was shot while sitting in a taxi waiting in a drive-through line at a fast food restaurant in South Carolina. Bierbrodt, optioned to the Class A Charleston RiverDogs this week, is in serious condition.
ORIOLES: The team placed right-hander Calvin Maduro on the 15-day disabled list and activated pitcher Jason Johnson, who will start today against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
RANGERS: Carrying 24 fewer pounds -- down to 208 pounds from 232 --Ivan Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list and returned to his usual role as ' starting catcher and No. 2 hitter. Rodriguez played only 12 games before being disabled April 15 with a herniated disk in his back. He was hitting .222 with only five RBIs.
REDS: Ken Griffey Jr. limped off the field against the Anaheim Angels with a mild strain of his right hamstring.
Griffey only returned to the Reds a little more than two weeks ago after missing 41 games earlier this season with a torn tendon in his right knee. This injury is to the same leg.
With the Reds trailing 4-0, Griffey pulled up lame after hustling to first base on a fielder's choice grounder in the fourth inning. Reggie Taylor replaced him in center field.
