JACKSON -- Woodland pulled away with 3-pointers and kept Jackson at bay with deadly free-throw shooting as the Cardinals upset the Indians 59-51 in boys high school basketball action Tuesday night.
Woodland, led by Jason Greer's 16 points, had four players in double figures as it evened its record at 6-6.
The Class 2A Cardinals had not defeated the 4A Indians in a number of years.
"They're a small school and it's a big win for them," said Jackson coach Steve Burk, whose team fell to 6-7. "You have to give them credit and just move on to the next ballgame".
"When we've played them it's always been close games, but we've never been able to win," said Woodland coach Jennings Wilkinson. "Jackson is a great team and has a tremendous program. Our kids just played really well."
With the game tied 19-19 at halftime, Woodland sank three of its six 3-pointers in the third period to take a 37-30 lead.
"We just didn't do a very good job offensively and then we had to chase and foul and they made their free throws," said Burk.
The Cardinals hit seven of their eight free throws in the fourth quarter as they outscored Jackson 22-21.
C.W. Stacy added 13 points for Woodland while Ryan Bandermann had 12 and Jared Houchins had 10.
Tory Myer sank three 3-point shots in scoring a game-high 17 points for Jackson. Jeremy Hager, 11 points, was the only other Indian in double figures.
"We didn't shoot the ball very well," said Burk. "We struggle from two-point range and from behind the 3-point line. You have to give Woodland some credit. They played well and shot the ball extremely well. They were better prepared than we were."
Scott City 85, Delta 39
SCOTT CITY -- The Class 2A Scott City Rams, now ranked second in the state, forced 28 turnovers in a lopsided victory over Delta, improving to 13-1 on the season.
The Rams have now won seven straight, including 30 out of their last 32 games, and improved to 5-0 in the Scott Mississippi Conference.
The Rams dominated Delta 26-10 in the opening quarter and went on to take a 51-14 lead into the second half.
The Rams outscored Delta 28-12 in the third quarter and led 79-26 going into the final eight minutes.
"We had 10 guys find the scoring column," said Scott City coach Derek McCord, "and it's nice to see some of them get some playing time. Delta came back and played hard for four quarters. They never quit."
Another possible key to the Rams' success was a 34-22 rebounding edge over the overmatched Bobcats.
Scott City's Ryan Weatherspoon led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Ronald Watson with 14 and Ricky Keller with 10.
Troy Nussbaum led the Bobcats with 11 points, followed by Robbie Lemonds with 10.
The Rams will play host to Notre Dame Friday night.

Advance (11-1) outscored Chaffee 20-10 in the opening period and took a 28-19 lead into halftime. The Hornets poured it on in the second half, outscoring Chaffee 26-12 down the stretch.
"Basically, we played really well in the first quarter," said Advance coach Jim Hall. "In the second, I played all the substitutes and they didn't play very well at first. Chaffee played a patient offense and looked for the good shot, but we came back in the third and got some things going."

Chase Eskew led the Red Devils with 10 points.

"We're struggling a bit right now," said Boshell. "Our chemistry is not real good right now."
Perhaps Oran's chemistry will improve when its leading scorer and starting center Travis Friga returns. Friga is expected to resume practice today and be back for the upcoming conference tournament.
