Wood lifts reeling Cubs

CINCINNATI -- Kerry Wood (11-6) allowed two hits in seven innings and struck out nine, and Rondell White and Michael Tucker each drove in four runs as Chicago won for only the second time in eight games, beating the Reds 10-0 Wednesday night.

Joey Hamilton (0-1), released by Toronto after going 5-8 with a 5.89 ERA, gave up five runs and four hits in three innings.

PHILLIES 5, BRAVES 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Scott Rolen delivered yet another big hit, and Philadelphia beat Atlanta for the third straight night and moved within a half-game of the first-place Braves in the NL East.

Atlanta had won six of seven before terrorist attacks forced postponement of last week's games.

Rolen, who hit two homers off Greg Maddux in Monday's 5-2 win and had the game-winning hit off John Smoltz in Tuesday's 4-3 victory, gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the sixth off John Burkett (11-11) and made three outstanding plays at third base.

Rookie David Coggin (5-5), who had lost four straight decisions, allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. Jose Mesa worked the ninth for his 38th save.

ROCKIES 8, DIAMONDBACKS 2

DENVER -- Mike Hampton (14-11) beat NL West-leading Arizona despite walking seven in five innings.

Before 30,301, the smallest home crowd in the nine-year history of the Rockies, Colorado got two RBIs each from Hampton, Terry Shumpert and Juan Uribe.

Luis Gonzalez hit his 52nd home run, a two-run drive in the fifth. Albie Lopez (3-6) gave up seven runs and nine hits in 2 2-3 innings, his shortest outing this season.

EXPOS 5, MARLINS 2

MONTREAL -- Vladimir Guerrero hit his 34th homer, a two-run drive in the fifth off Josh Beckett (1-1). With 101 RBIs, Guerrero topped 100 for the fourth straight season.

Montreal drew 2,887, the Expos' smallest home crowd since 2,803 attended a weekday afternoon game on Sept. 27, 1984. The Expos drew just 8,817 for the three-game series.

Carl Pavano (1-4) allowed two runs and six hits in 7 1-3 innings for his first win since June 19, 2000. Scott Strickland pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

METS 9, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH -- Todd Zeile and Mike Piazza homered for the second straight game and the Mets, again wearing hats in tribute to New York's firefighters, police and rescue workers, finished off a three-game sweep.

Dicky Gonzalez (3-2) pitched 6 2-3 shutout innings in relief of an ineffective Glendon Rusch for the victory as the Mets won for the 20th time in 25 games.

Zeile, in a power slump all year, hit a go-ahead three-run drive in the fourth off Tony McKnight (3-4) -- his second homer in three at-bats and his ninth of the season.
