Michelle Wie walked off the course at Royal Lytham pleased with her par saves on the final two holes.
Then she got to the recorders' office and realized her effort was all for naught.
The 16-year-old Wie was penalized two strokes for making contact with a piece of moss behind her ball during her backswing while hitting out of a greenside bunker at the 14th. That left her with a 2-over 74 Friday and a two-day total of 4-over 148 in the Women's British Open -- 10 shots behind leader Juli Inkster.
Inkster had an even-par 72, leaving her at 6-under 138, three shots better than Italy's Silvia Cavalleri (73). Inkster is seeking her eighth major and, if she can hold on, the 46-year-old star would become the oldest player to win an LPGA Tour major.
Dalhousie Golf Club touring pro Karen Stupples was one of the big movers on Friday. The 2004 winner of the Women's British Open shot a 3-under 69 in the second round and moved into a tie for third place at 2-under par.
Lorie Kane (69), Candie Kung (70) and Lindsey Wright (71) also were 2 under. Annika Sorenstam (71) was another stroke back along with Paula Creamer (71), Sophie Gustafson (67), Sherri Steinhauer (70), Il Mi Chung (71) and Gwladys Nocera (73).
Tiger Woods birdied three straight holes to take the lead in the suspended second round of the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich., then Brett Quigley birdied the 18th hole after the horn sounded to move into a tie.
Woods, 13 under for the tournament, was 7 under through 15 holes in the second round before play was stopped because of darkness. He will finish his round early Saturday morning and will start his third round in the afternoon after a long break.
Quigley saved himself an early wakeup call by finishing the 18th hole for a 6-under 66, and will have an afternoon tee time with the leaders.
Jeff Sluman and Bo Van Pelt were two shots back. They both finished the second round, with Sluman shooting a 67, and Van Pelt carding a 66.
Andy Bean birdied three of his final four holes for a 5-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over six players after the first round of the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn.
Bean, winless in four seasons on the Champions Tour, had six birdies and a bogey on the TPC Twin Cities course. The 11-time PGA Tour winner has had three top-seven finishes this season, including a tie for fifth in July in the U.S. Senior Open.
Loren Roberts, the tour money leader coming off a victory last week in the Senior British Open, was a stroke back along with defending champion Tom Purtzer, J.C. Snead, Curtis Strange and Keith Fergus.
