Whitney sets 200-meter dash record, wins twice in state meet

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Jackson's Mario Whitney swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Class 4A state track and field championship Saturday.

Whitney's blistering time of 20.9 seconds in the 200 eclipsed the state record of 21.28 set by Jon Vaughn of McCluer North in 1988.

Whitney blazed to the 100 title in 10.40, one-tenth of a second off the state-record time.

Stuart McIntosh, Jackson's junior pole vaulter, reached a personal-best vault of 14 feet for sixth place and the Indians finished seventh in the overall team standings with 23 points.

Cape Girardeau Central's boys had 12 points for 18th-place.

Central junior Jeremiah Dukes took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 9 inches and the 1,600 relay team of Zeno Walker, Monroe Hicks, Will Johnson and Calen Wills placed eighth (3:26.20).

Chris Smith accounted for the other Central points with a second in the shot put on Friday.

Central and Jackson's girls finished 26th (7.5 points) and 28th (6 points), respectively, in team standings.

Central's 3,200 team of Kim Pancoast, Jennifer Pancoast, Alex Wieser and Whitney Pingel set a school record for the second consecutive meet with a time of 9:39.40 for fifth-place.

Repeat all-stater Lainie Bohnsack claimed Central's other points with a fifth-place tie in the high jump.

Jackson junior Heather West produced all the Indians' points with a fourth in the triple jump (37-1.25) Friday and an eighth-place in the long jump (17-2).

In Class 3A, Perryville sophomore Kyle Dobbelare scored 13 points with and won the long jump (22-4) and finished sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.10) to lead the Pirates to 10th in the team standings with 22 points.

Also, Brian Hadler captured a sixth-place medal for Perryville in the 800 (2:00.0).

The Perryville girls 1,600 relay team of Gina Buerck, Sarah Lappe, Melissa Crannick and Emily Amberger took fifth in 4:08.20.
