Last year: South Africa's Retief Goosen beat Mark Brooks 70-72 in a Monday playoff at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla. Goosen three-putted the 72nd hole from 12 feet to fall into the playoff with Brooks, who also three-putted the final hole. Stewart Cink finished a stroke back after missing an 18-inch putt on the final hole.
Last week: Chris Smith won the Buick Classic in Harrison, N.Y., for his first PGA Tour title, holding off David Gossett, Loren Roberts and Pat Perez by two strokes. Smith failed to qualify for the U.S. Open. ... Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke won the English Open for the third time in four years.
Notes: Tiger Woods, winless in eight majors as a pro on par-70 courses, is attempting to become the first player since Jack Nicklaus in 1972 to win the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year. Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach for the first of four straight major titles, winning by a major-record 15 strokes and finishing at 12-under 272 to become the first player in tournament history to complete 72 holes at double digits under par. The seven-time major champion won USGA titles in six consecutive years, the U.S. Junior from 1991-93 and the U.S. Amateur from 1994-96. ... The Black Course, the first taxpayer-owned U.S. Open venue, is one of five 18-hole layouts at Bethpage State Park. A.W. Tillinghast is credited with designing the Black, but Golf Digest research shows parks superintendent Joe Burbeck as the architect and Tillinghast as the consultant. At 7,214 yards, the course is the longest in U.S. Open history -- a yard more than Congressional in 1997.

Last week: Se Ri Pak won the LPGA Championship in Wilmington, Del., to become the youngest woman to win four major championships. The 24-year-old South Korean star, four strokes behind Beth Daniel at the start of the final round, shot a 1-under 70 to win by three strokes.
Notes: Pak has 15 victories in five seasons on the LPGA Tour. ... Annika Sorenstam, third in the LPGA Championship, leads the tour with four victories and $1,039,054 in 10 starts this year. She also won her season-opening event in Australia. SENIOR PGA TOUR

Last week: Fuzzy Zoeller won the Senior PGA Championship at Firestone in Akron, Ohio, his first victory since the PGA Tour's 1986 Anheuser-Busch Classic. He closed with a 2-under 68 to edge Irwin and Bobby Wadkins by two strokes.
Notes: Irwin and Tom Kite are playing in the U.S. Open. Irwin won the U.S. Open in 1974, 1979 and 1990 and Kite took the 1992 tournament. ... Bruce Fleisher, the 1999 BellSouth winner, is in the field after withdrawing from the U.S. Open.
