University honors student-athletes with 3.0 GPA or better

Southeast Missouri State honored 137 athletes Wednesday during the university's annual Scholar Athlete Luncheon at the University Center.

Southeast athletes with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher were recognized.

The 137 honorees represent 48 percent of the student-athletes at Southeast, including 71 percent of the female student-athletes. The group includes a record 20 athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Southeast athletes with a 4.0 GPA include seven members of the women's gymnastics team that was recognized for winning the academic national championship during the 2006-07 school year with a collective 3.741 GPA.

Gymnasts with a perfect GPA are Sandra Blake, Lauren Dinan, Maureen Grimaldi, Jacqueline Heath, Kelley Krengiel, Erica Moore and Christina Sundgren.

Five women's soccer players have a 4.0 GPA: Courtney Alexander, Kristi Frick, Amber Garner, Vanessa Hart and Ellen Rehfus.

Also with a 4.0 are four members of the women's track/cross country program: Brandi Gervais, Cara Harbstreet, Lauren McNamara and Amy Warren.

Others who have attained perfect marks are Andrew Wiese (baseball), Molly Davis (volleyball), Rachel Blunt (women's basketball) and Whitney Dupuis (softball).

Also honored were 14 cheerleaders, 11 Sundancers and 13 student trainers.

Gymnasts in home finale

The Southeast gymnastics team will close out its home schedule today when Texas Women's University visits Houck Field House for a 7 p.m. meet.

Southeast is ranked 35th nationally with a regional qualifying score of 194.035. The top 36 squads in the final rankings qualify for an NCAA regional.

TWU is ranked 39th at 193.120, but the Pioneers beat the Redhawks on Feb. 8 in Denton, Texas, prevailing 194.150 to 193.375.

Alison Ezell, Southeast's lone senior, will be recognized tonight.

"It's a big meet for us, and it would be nice to have a really strong performance for Alison's final time competing at home," Southeast coach Tom Farden said.

Baseball rained out

Wednesday's scheduled baseball game between host Southeast and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville was rained out. It likely will not be made up.

The Redhawks (6-6) begin Ohio Valley Conference play Friday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Tennessee Tech. The squads will also play a 1 p.m. single contest Saturday.
