~ The Rams dropped their third straight game to fall to 1-3-1
BROSELEY, Mo -- The Twin Rivers Royals put up two runs in the first inning and rolled over the Scott City Rams 5-1 on Friday.
The Rams have dropped three straight after winning their opener against Jackson, while Twin Rivers hadn't played since Thursday after two straight rainouts.
Twin Rivers' Garret Stockton led off the first inning with a single and Kaleb Doyle walked. Then cleanup hitter Ryan Nippe lofted a ball to right field, where Brett Dirnberger leapt and caught the ball but fell to the ground.
Stockton and Doyle took advantage. Both players scored on the play.
The Royals' bats continued to roll in the second inning.
Stockton singled up the middle to drive in one, then Doyle smacked a two-run single to put the Royals up 5-0.
Stockton, making his first start of the spring, allowed runners in the first and second innings before retiring 14 straight.
Landon Robert broke the streak in the sixth inning when he reached base on an error.
Robert then nearly scored when Dirnberger stroked a single to left.
Robert headed home but was cut down at the plate by Twin Rivers shortstop Michael Snider to end the inning.
The Rams finally broke through against Stockton in the top of the seventh.
Alex Eichhorn singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. He then went to third two batters later on an error.
Eichhorn scored as Chris Limbaugh stole second and the ball was overthrown.
Limbaugh advanced to third base and attempted to head home on a wild pitch before getting tagged out by Stockton at the plate.
Stockton then notched his 11th strikeout of the afternoon to end the game.
Cox allowed just three runners from the fourth inning on and totaled five strikeouts.
Scott City returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Oran.
