PADUCAH, Ky. -- The Jackson REMAX Achievers and Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Senior Legion teams will travel about two hours just to play each other today.

Both teams won their games Saturday night and will square off in the fifth-place game in the Paducah Tournament today at 1 p.m.

Jackson (14-5) defeated Paducah, Ky., 8-3

Trey Busch led Jackson with two hits and three RBIs, while Brandon Cooper added three RBIs. Tyler Profilet had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Jason Meystedt (4-1) picked up the win.

Cape (10-16) defeated Shelbyville, Ky., 10-8 in eight innings. Cape, which trailed 7-5 entering the seventh and final regulation inning, scored two runs to send it to extra frames.

Corey Huskey and Kendal Deason each had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Cape pounded out eight total hits.

Wayne Essner started the game and was relieved by Mike Taylor, who pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, scattered two hits and allowed one run to pick up the win.

Cape and Jackson actually tied two other teams for first with their pool play records but missed out on the championship game during the re-seeding process because of the tie-breaker rule.

Riverdogs splitVALMEYER, Ill. -- The Cape Girardeau Riverdogs split their double-header with the host Valmeyer (Ill.) Lakers, winning the opener 13-2 and losing the nightcap 4-1.

It's the third time this year the Riverdogs (6-9) have won the opening game and gone on to lose the finale.

The Riverdogs pounded out 10 hits in the first game. In addition, they received strong pitching from David Mathis, who struck out nine and allowed just six hits in a complete game.

Adam Friga had two doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Riverdogs. Tyler Schlosser and Ryne Wood each had two hits and two RBIs.

The second game was tied 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Valmeyer rattled off four straight hits and scored three runs against starter Tim Davis. Valmeyer had a single, double and home run all with two outs.

The Riverdogs host the St. Louis Pros at 7:30 tonight.
