Tigers lose lead, prevail in overtime

The Central boys basketball team saw an 11-point fourth-quarter lead slip away Friday night, but the Tigers regrouped and beat visiting New Madrid County Central 59-56 in overtime.

Central evened its overall record at 8-8 and improved to 2-0 in SEMO Conference play.

Jajuan Bell continued his recent strong play for the Tigers with 24 points. George Hamilton added 19 points for Central.

"Jajuan is really playing well," Central coach Drew Church said.

"We couldn't hold a lead in the fourth quarter," Church added, "but it was good to bounce back and win in overtime."

Central is back in action today, playing at St. Louis Metro.

Visiting Charleston rode a dominating second-quarter outburst to victory at the Ronnie Cookson Gymnasium.

A 24-3 run beginning with about 5 minutes left in the half broke open the game featuring two state-ranked teams.

Scott Central, ranked fifth in Class 1, led 26-24 when the Bluejays, ranked third in Class 3, took control. When the dust settled, the Bluejays held a commanding 48-29 halftime lead.

Scott Central cut the margin to 12 going into the final period, but got no closer.

Jamarcus Williams led four Bluejays in double figures with a game-high 27 points -- 13 in the second period -- to go with 15 rebounds.

D.D. Gillespie and Mark Freed topped the Braves with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Drew Thomas chipped in with 11.

St. Vincent used a big advantage from the free-throw line to win a Jefferson County Conference road game.

The Indians (8-5) hit 25 of 38 free throws, while Grandview was just 7-for-22. St. Vincent is 2-1 in league play, and 2-0 in the small schools division of its conference.

Justin L'Hote led St. Vincent with 15 points and Gregory Finger added 14.

Senior Seth Gaines erupted for 46 points to lead Woodland in a home victory.

Gaines hit eight 3-pointers against the program that set the national record for 3-pointers in a game last season and was 12-for-13 on free throws.

"He came out early, making four 3s in the first qurter," Woodland coach David Mirly said. "The key was Caleb Lee and Timmy Abner penetrating and kicking out to him for open shots. He just knocked them down tonight."

Gaines had 28 points by halftime and added 10 more in the third period.

His younger brother, sophomore Chad Gaines, chipped in with 17 points.

Woodland improved to 4-9.

Tyler Wagner led Meadow Heights with 26 points, while Derrick Wilfong added 15.

David VanGennip came off the bench to score a team-leading 24 points and added nine rebounds in the Hornets' win at Richland.

"He had a huge night and gave us a big lift off the bench," Advance coach Joe Shoemaker said. "He's starting to play with more confidence. He played with more energy and had a good night."

Alex Steil added 17 points and Trenton Moses threw in 16 for the Hornets, who improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in Stoddard County Activities Association action.

VanGennip hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Hornets rally from an early deficit.

"We didn't shoot well and missed some open looks early, but they made the adjustments and started pounding the ball inside to make a little run," Shoemaker said. "And those 3-pointers by VanGennip were really big.

"But Richland's a scrappy team," he added. "We've been battling sickness lately, but we came out and played hard."

Oak Ridge 69, Zalma 62

Oak Ridge outscored host Zalma 25-16 in the fourth quarter for a comeback win.

Garrett Light led the Bluejays (2-8) with 16 points, Dustin Meyr had 15 and Dylan Abbott and Josh Hormann had 12 apiece.

Timmy Rodgers led Zalma with 21 points and Justin Lemons had 20.
