BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- When time stood still for the Tigers of Cape Central Saturday, it usually was not kind.
With Belleville Althoff holding a 24-1 scoring advantage from the free throw line, the Crusaders posted a 70-54 victory over the Tigers.
Foul problems compounded illnesses to starters Ross Conner and Donnie McClinton to prove too much for Cape Central, which fell to 9-11.
"They got ball in places too where they shouldn't of got the ball," said Cape Central coach Brett Reutzel "I think that contributed. We just didn't play real good defense."
In the absence of McClinton and Wessel, Demetrius Totton stepped up and scored 14 points to lead the Tigers.
"I thought Totton had a good game," said Reutzel. He's not a regular starter but he played hard."
Kelly Illers added 11 points for the Tigers.
Scott Timmerman scored a game-high 18 points for Althoff.
Althoff led 21-14 after one quarter and extended its lead to a comfortable 40-24 margin by halftime. The Crusaders took a 57-35 lead into the final quarter.
"I thought we played hard but the execution wasn't there," said Reutzel. They're not a bad team. If we're healthy, I think we could have given it a little better show."
