A hot start has the Cape Central Tigers feeling good as the 2023 Dig for Life tournament approaches.

The Tigers are 5-0 and have won every match in straight sets.

“We’ve got off to a really good start,” Tigers coach Haley Silman said. “I’m really proud of them. We had a good player go down last night, and they could have really let it affect them, but they didn’t. They rallied together and kept it together, and played well.”

2023 has been kind to the Tigers so far, but Silman knows there will be adversity this weekend.

“We always take it one game at a time,” Silman said. “I told the girls earlier that we have some stiff competition this weekend. One thing we’ve been working on is staying up at our level and playing at our level. I think we’ll be pretty good.”

The Tigers find themselves in Red Division, Pool B alongside Advance, South Iron and Valle Catholic.

“I feel like we’re competitive,” Silman said. “I’m glad we’re in a good, competitive pool to kind of see early in the season where we are compared to some of the other teams in the area.”

The keys to success for the Tigers will be keeping a consistent level of play according to Silman.

“We have to play every point like it’s our last,” Silman said. “You have to fight because every point matters, especially in rally.”

Dig For Life is an opportunity for Silman to reconnect with old friends and her family.

“It’s always fun,” Silman said. “I get to see a lot of friends and people I’ve coached against and seen from throughout the years. Some of my friends back home and my family come up, so it’s a good tournament.”

Pool play for the Tigers begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 against Advance at the SEMO Student Recreation Center.

The Tigers will also battle South Iron at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
