Central got big pins from Matt Welker at 119 pounds and Brandon Pender at 171 pounds. Last year's lone state qualifier Trever Duncan won by a technical fall 16-1.

The Tigers will travel to the Fox Tournament this weekend.

Central's JV team won its opener 30-12 over Murphysboro.

Jackson 77, New Madrid Central 6

Jackson dominated its season opener on the road, losing only one match.

The Indians won all but one match by pin, and won the lone non-pin by a technical fall.

Jackson will travel to the Fox Tournament this weekend.

Jackson's JV team won 81-0.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Oran Tournament

Fourth-seeded Kelly opened its season and rolled past No. 5 Gideon 83-50 in the final first-round tournament game.

Trey Simmons led a balanced Kelly attack with 16 points. Also in double figures were Major Burger (15), Brooks Edmond (14) and Lance Scheffer (13).

In a consolation semifinal, No. 7 Scott County Central knocked off North Pemiscot 85-71.

The Braves (1-1) got 22 points from Jeremy Johnson, 21 from Andrew Pullen, 16 from Chris Pullen and 10 from Matt Holman.

In Thursday's semifinals, No. 1 Twin Rivers plays Kelly at 6:30 p.m. and No. 2 Bell City meets No. 3 Oran at 8. Gideon and No. 8 Richland play at 5 in a consolation semifinal.

Woodland Tournament

Third-seeded Leopold opened tournament play by easing past No. 6 Zalma 66-49.

Kevin Holzum led the Wildcats (1-1) with 25 points and Josh Van de Ven added 18. For the Bulldogs (1-1), Chad Wiseman had 13 points and Jamie Mangrum had 10.

In consolation semifinal action, No. 4 Meadow Heights bounced back from Monday's tough loss to Bloomfield by slipping past No. 8 Oak Ridge 65-61.

Joey Bell had 30 points and 15 rebounds for the Panthers (2-1). Chris Burr added 16. For Oak Ridge (0-3), Austin Morrison hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 points. Zach Ruesler had 19 and Alex Fadler scored 11.

Thursday's semifinals pit No. 1 Advance against No. 5 Bloomfield at 6:30 p.m. and No. 2 Woodland against Leopold at 8. At 5, Zalma meets No. 7 Delta in a consolation semifinal.

East Prairie 44, Chaffee 36

Chaffee came up short in its season opener, falling to East Prairie on the road.

James Reischman led Chaffee with 12 points while Matt Boyer poured in 24 points for East Prairie.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Delta 59, St. Vincent 18

Delta won in convincing fashion at home to improve to 2-0.

Rebecca Below led all scorers with 16. Rebecca Cook added 15 points and Sarah J. Cook had 14. Below also added 11 rebounds.

With Delta in early foul trouble and only up three after the first quarter, Andrea Dohogne came in and gave Delta some quality minutes off the bench to help Delta outscore St. Vincent 17-0 in the second quarter.

BOYS' SWIMMING

Kirkwood 129, Central 57

Central fell to 0-2 on the season with a dual meet loss to Kirkwood at home.

Central was only able to score two first-place finishes on the day. Alex Heddle took first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07:50. Sam Maguire took the other first, swimming the 100 freestyle in 54:37.

Central also had strong performances from Kris Metje and Andrew Moreton. Moreton took second in the 50 freestyle, second in the 100 backstroke and was a member of the second-place 400 freestyle relay and third-place 200 medley relay. Metje finished third in the 200 individual medley, third in the 500 freestyle and was also on the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay teams.

Central will travel to Poplar Bluff today to get its first look at the Mules' swimming program. --From staff reports
