Tiger swimmers make 2 state cuts at Springfield Invitational

Central's boys swimming team made the most of a long trip to Springfield, Mo., posting two state-qualifying times and finishing seventh Saturday at the 21-team Springfield Invitational.

Sam Maguire finished second in the 50 free with a time of 22.9 seconds to qualify for state. Central's 200 medley relay team also qualified with a time of 1:48.12. The team consisted of Maguire, Clay Schermann, Alex Heddle and Jason Mercer.

Central's other top performance was from the 200 relay team, which finished second in 1:32.83. The team, which is the same as the medley relay team, shaved nearly two seconds off its state-qualifying time.

The Notre Dame girls basketball team lost to Metro High School of St. Louis in the semifinals of Villa Duchesne's Queen of Hearts Tournament.

The Bulldogs trailed 19-5 after one period and 35-13 by halftime.

Sommer McCauley led Notre Dame (10-8) with 12 points.

Metro (15-2) advanced to today's championship game against Windsor. Notre Dame plays host Villa Duchesne at 12:30 p.m. today in the third-place game.

April Lorenz scored 20 points to become Perryville High School's all-time leading scorer in a victory over St. Vincent.

Lorenz's final points midway through the fourth quarter gave her 1,412 points and eclipsed the record of 1,411 set by Kathy Rubach in 1984.

"She would have broken it earlier, but she's been injured so much in her four years," Perryville coach Vicki Lohmann said of her 6-foot senior.

Jackson's junior varsity boys team won the Malden JV Tournament with a 61-28 win over Hayti. Logan Bollinger led the Indians (17-1) with 12 points and Trey Stone had 10.

The Jackson junior varsity wrestling team rolled to first place in the SEMO Conference meet. The Indians had first-place finishers in 11 of the 14 weight classes and second-place finishers in the other three.

Central finished in a tie for seventh in the team standings with two second-place wrestlers.

Jackson's eighth-grade boys basketball team beat Central 43-40 in the championship of the season-ending Jackson Junior High tournament. Hunter Grantham led Jackson (13-1) with 12 points and Spencer Goodman and Antonio Garritano had 11 apiece. Garrett Stevens led Central (12-2) with 23 points.

In the freshman tournament Jackson beat Farmington 47-40 in the championship. Logan Lawson scored 13 and Luke Crader had 10 for Jackson. Central lost 41-39 in overtime to New Madrid County Central in the third-place game. Anwar Glen scored 14 and Blake Slattery had 10 for Central.
