Three local soccer teams captured championships over the weekend during the annual City of Roses Invitational that was deemed a big success by tournament director Howard Aslinger.
"We had another very good tournament," said Aslinger of the Saturday and Sunday event that featured 57 teams in a variety of age divisions for both boys and girls. "There was some excellent soccer and everybody really enjoyed themselves."
Cape Girardeau squads capturing titles were Classic United in under-10 girls, Classic United in under-11 girls and the Cape Terror in under-10 boys.
Two Cape teams finished second: the Cape Magic in under-11 girls and Classic United in under-13 boys.
Aslinger said there was plenty of talent in the tournament, particularly in the under-12 boys division, where the Wolfpack from St. Louis finished first and the Reservoire Futbol Club of Jackson, Miss., placed second.
"Those teams were probably as good as any teams you'll find anywhere," he said. "The Wolfpack is an excellent team and the Reservoire Futbol Club is the Mississippi state champion. They've been to a lot of tournaments."
