The event was run at night in 1999 and 2000 because of high temperatures before returning to daytime last season. ... John Force set a Funny Car record of 315.27 mph in qualifying during the 2000 event. ... Kalitta is the only active Top Fuel driver to win at Gateway. ... WINSTON CUP
Last race: Ricky Rudd picked up his first victory of the season by winning the Dodge/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, Calif. Jerry Nadeau appeared to have the victory with two laps to go, but rear-end gear failure ended his day. Jeff Gordon led for 30 laps, but also encountered rear-end gear failure and finished 37th.
