ST. LOUIS -- San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, who hit .362, set a record with 232 walks and topped 700 career homers, was named 2004 player of the year by The Sporting News on Tuesday.
The award was based on a vote by 552 players.
Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Adrian Beltre was second with 116, followed by St. Louis Cardinals teammates Scott Rolen (93 votes) and Albert Pujols (64).
Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox was named National League manager of the year.
Other NLawards: Pitcher, Jason Schmidt, San Francisco; Rookie, Jason Bay, Pittsburgh; Comeback player, Chris Carpenter, St. Louis; Top reliever, Eric Gagne, Los Angeles.
NL all-stars included four Cardinals -- Pujols at first base, Rolen at third base, shortstop Edgar Renteria and outfielder Jim Edmonds.
