Capahas suffer 5-4 setback at Valmeyer

VALMEYER, Ill. -- The Cape Girardeau Craftsman Union Capahas lost to Valmeyer (Ill.) 5-4 Saturday in their final regular-season game.

The Capahas (27-9) will play the Austin (Texas) Gold Sox at 1 p.m. Monday in the first round of the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan.

Zach Borowiak's two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning gave the Capahas a 4-3 lead, which they carried into the bottom of the ninth.

Jason Chavez (6-2), the Capahas' fifth pitcher of the day, gave up a leadoff walk and a one-out bunt single. With two outs, Josh Crawford delivered a two-run double to lift Valmeyer.

Borowiak had two of the Capahas' four hits. Valmeyer had 11 hits.

Capahas starter Craig Ringwald allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in five innings. Justin Holmes, Justin Simpher and Ricky Pecaut all worked one scoreless inning.

Dunklin County wins American Legion title

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Top-seeded Dunklin County needed to play two games Saturday but still won the American Legion District 14 Tournament for the sixth time in the last seven years.

After second-seeded Sikeston handed Dunklin County its first tournament loss, 10-6, Dunklin County came back to hammer Sikeston 15-4 in seven innings in the 'if-necessary' title contest.

Dunklin County (35-7) advances to the zone tournament that begins Thursday in Cape Girardeau.

Nathan Baker was the winning pitcher in Saturday's final game. Mark Adam Wade took the loss.

In Saturday's opener, Lance Rhodes was the winner. Sikeston (20-9), which trailed 6-1 after two innings before taking the lead for good with a two-run fourth, had 15 hits and four home runs. Blake DeWitt went 4-for-5 with a homer while Scotty Keenan, Jake Priday and Nathan Eaves all homered.

Billy Palmer homered for Dunklin County. Jonathan Winston took the loss.

Local teams dominate regional softball event

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Local teams have dominated the Babe Ruth Softball Midwest Plains Regional Tournament entering today's championship round.

In the 14-under division, the Heartland Nationals routed Kansas Twin Lakes 13-0 in five innings Saturday to remain undefeated in the tournament.

The Nationals will play Colorado East Central East in today's noon title contest. Colorado came out of the loser's bracket Saturday, beating the Southeast Denver Redhotts 12-1 and Kansas Twin Lakes 11-3.

In the 12-under division, the Heartland Nationals and Heartland Americans will square off at noon today for the title.

The Nationals rolled past the Southeast Denver Blue Stars 11-0 in five innings Saturday to remain undefeated in the tournament.

The Americans came out of the loser's bracket to win three games Saturday, beating Colorado East Central East 5-2, the Minnesota White Park Stardom 21-3 and the Southeast Denver Blue Stars 12-8.

Jamie Pobst pitched a two-hit shutout for the 14-under Nationals in their victory. Tori St. Cin had three hits and five RBIs. Miranda Schlosser had two hits and three RBIs while Sarah Cook added two hits.

Sarah Benton and Kristain Burger combined on a no-hitter for the 12-under Nationals in their win. Benton pitched the first four innings. Rachel Hendrix, Kalie Hughes and Jodi Urhahn all had two hits.

For the 12-under Americans, Olivia Coomer had five hits in their three victories while Brittany Brantley added four hits. Louise Blankenship picked up two wins, allowing just four hits in 12 innings. Courtney Walter got the other victory.

Poplar Bluff golfers fourth, fifth in amateur event

LAKE OZARK, Mo. -- Mark McBride of Columbia shot a second-round 67 to lead at 141 in the Missouri Amateur StrokePlay event at LakeOzark.

Bobby Godwin of Poplar Bluff is fourth at 144 after a second-round 74. James Godwin ofPoplar Bluff shot a 72 Saturday to sit in fifth at 145.

Mark Allen of Jackson sits in 11th after shooting a 74. He has a two-day total of 149.

Sikeston racer wins in Malden sprint event

DaronClayton of Sikeston won Friday in the sprint feature race at Malden (Mo.)Speedway. Tim Montgomery of Fredericktown was second,Todd Rowland ofJackson third and Shawn King of Cape Girardeau fourth.

Bart Richardson of Bradford, Tenn., won in modifieds over RobertPowers of Campbell and Larry Hull of Old Appleton.
