The Jackson Senior American Legion baseball team left the bases loaded to end the game in its 11-9 loss to Dunklin County in Saturday's semifinal at the 7-Up Classic in Paragould, Ark.
Jackson entered the seventh inning with an 8-6 lead, but Dunklin County rallied.
Dunklin County tied the game on Lane Spencer's double then took the lead on David McDaniel's squeeze bunt. The A's added a run on Bryce Wallace's single and another run on an errant pickoff throw.
Jackson grabbed the lead on four hits and an error to score six runs in the fifth inning.
Ian Householder took the loss in relief.
Jackson reached the semifinals by defeating Jonesboro, Ark., American Legion 8-0 on Friday.
Jonesboro's Andrew Roach and Jackson's Cody Heisserer did not allow a run on the mound through the first four innings.
"The kid for Jonesboro threw real well and mixed his pitches," Jackson coach Mark Lewis said. "He was wild early, and I thought we should have hit him a little bit. He settled down after that. I thought our pitcher was also efficient early, which allowed him to pitch deeper into the game."
Jackson plated two runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to cruise to a six-inning victory courtesy of the eight-run mercy rule.
Jackson's Luke Petzoldt finished 3 for 4 with three singles and two RBIs. Householder had a two-run double in the sixth inning, and Joel Koenig hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
"We had runners on earlier in the game with guys in scoring position and didn't cash in," Lewis said. "We got two-out base hits late, and they are golden."
Heisserer collected a complete-game win for Jackson. He allowed just three hits and struck out eight.
Jackson (21-11), which is the defending champion in the tournament, will face Marion, Ark., in today's 5 p.m. third-place game.
The Jackson Junior American Legion baseball team swept Scott County Junior Legion in a doubleheader Friday.
Jackson scored six runs in the seventh inning to pull away for the 12-5 victory.
Zach Carlyle drove in two runs and Trent Pobst scored twice for Scott County.
Lane Henson suffered the loss.
Jackson scored seven runs in the first inning of the second game, but Scott County answered with eight runs in its half of the inning. That wasn't enough.
Jackson emerged with an 18-14 win in the second game.
Pobst went 4 for 5 with two RBIs, while Gaven Ray and Henson both collected three hits in the loss.
Scott County dropped to 12-13.
