JACKSON, Mo. -- A Ste. Genevieve grand slam in a five-run fifth inning doomed Jackson High's baseball team in a 7-1 loss Wednesday.

The Indians, who committed five errors, dropped to 1-1 after they picked up an impressive win over Notre Dame on Monday.

"As good as we looked against Notre Dame, we were on the other end of the spectrum today," Jackson coach Sam Sides said.

Jackson only managed three hits, scoring its lone run on a groundout in the sixth inning.

Bryan Austin suffered the loss. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Oran 27, Delta 1

ORAN -- The first two games of Oran's season could not have gone much better as the Eagles' latest romp means they have outscored the opposition 50-1 so far.

For a second straight day, Oran's contest was stopped after 4 1/2 innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

Adam Friga pitched the first four innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Patrick Friga gave up one hit and one run in the final inning. He fanned two.

Oran had 11 hits and benefited from 15 walks. Matt Bucher had two hits and drove in four runs while Adam Friga and Nathan Seyer each added two hits.

The Eagles scored eight runs in the first inning, came back with five in the second and exploded for 14 in the third.

Sikeston 12, Kelly 3

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Kelly lost its season opener as Sikeston romped.

The Hawks had just five hits, no player getting more than one. Brooks Heuring drove in two runs.

Tim Schmitt was the losing hurler, allowing eight hits and 10 runs (nine earned) in 1 2/3 innings.

Garrett Stricker was impressive in relief, giving up one hit in 3 1/3 shutout innings.

Bobby Landers was the winning pitcher, working five innings.

TRACK & FIELD

Cape Central romps

Cape Girardeau Central's teams got their seasons started on the right foot as the boys and girls both captured dual meets against visiting Sikeston.

Central's boys prevailed 87-59 while the girls romped 120-24.

Double individual winners for Central were O.J. Turner (110, 300 hurdles), Gabe Austin (800, 1,600), Vicky Wilson (100, 200), Kim Pancoast (800, 1,600) and Heather Jenkins (shot put, discus).

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee's boys and girls both won home quadrangular meets to open their seasons.

On the boys side, Chaffee scored 71 points to beat Portageville (69), Scott City (56) and Oran (13).

In the girls division, Chaffee had 75.5 points, followed by Scott City (61), Portageville (54.5) and Oran (14).

A highlight of the girls meet was Scott City freshman phenom Loren Groves winning the discus, high jump and both hurdles.

Cape Central 165

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston had four players card a sub-40 nine holes as Central lost in its season debut.

Freshman Todd Obergoenner led Central with a 38 on the par-36 Sikeston Country Club course.

"That was very encouraging for him in his first varsity match," said Central coach Dick Wadlington.

Obergoenner was followed by Nick Harter and Luke Oliver with 42s and Paul York with a 43.

Brandon Couch carded a 36 for Sikeston followed by Tanner Fritz with a 37 and Brandon DeWitt and John Spence with 39s.

"Sikeston had an outstanding score," Wadlington said. "The quality is really up in the area this year and Sikeston may be the best. We didn't do too badly, but I think we can do better."

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Vincent 1, St. Pius 0

PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent got off on the right foot with a Jefferson County Conference win over St. Pius.

Amanda Carron scored St. Vincent's goal in the 31st minute on an assist from Kindle Ernst and Caitlin Hoeh.

"We played real good team defense," St. Vincent coach Eric Long said. "Our goalie was outstanding, too."

Mindy Cattoor recorded six saves for St. Vincent.

SOFTBALL

Egyptian 4, Kelly 2

TAMMS, Ill. -- In a battle of perennially strong teams, Egyptian handed Kelly a loss in its season opener.

Natalie Lewer was the losing hurler, even though she gave up just one earned run along with seven hits.

Monica Senciboy had two of Kelly's six hits.
