PATTON, Mo. -- Defending Class 1A state baseball champion St. Vincent opened the season in noisy fashion on Monday, blasting Meadow Heights 23-0 in three innings.
The Indians saw their first 14 batters of the season reach base and score in a 14-run first inning.
St. Vincent (1-0) added five runs in the second and four in the third. Derek Kutz, who had three doubles and three RBIs, pitched the first inning and picked up the win. Adam Bockman pitched the final two innings and yielded Meadow Height's lone hit.
Ryan Brown added a triple, a home run and four RBIs as the Indians banged out 17 hits overall. Ten of the hits came in the first inning.
GIRLS SOFTBALL
Scott City 7, East Prairie 5
EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. -- Shana Wadlington fanned 16 batters while hurling the Lady Red Devils to a win over East Prairie in the season opener for both squads.
Wadlington allowed four hits in shutting out the Lady Eagles through the first four innings while Scott City grabbed a 5-0 lead. East Prairie scored five runs in the last three frames.
First baseman Lindsey Baker led the Scott City offense with three singles in four trips and drove home three runs.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Cape Central 113, Oakville 73
ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central, placing first in eight events, picked up its first dual win of the season.
Casie Brennan had a hand in half of the wins, claiming victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle and swimming legs on the victorious medley and 400-freestyle relays.
Katie Maginel also picked up a pair of individual firsts, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle, and also swam on the medley relay. Marci Kester, also a member of the medley squad, claimed a first in the 100 breaststroke and Sara Sprigg won the diving competition.
Cape Central (1-3) returns to action Thursday when it faces Notre Dame in a dual meet for the first time.

ST. LOUIS -- The young Lady Bulldogs held their own against one of the top teams in the state.
Notre Dame of St. Louis, second in Class 1A-3A last season, scored two first-half goals and held on for the win.
"We played them even in the second half," said Lady Bulldog coach Jeff Worley. "I was pleased with our performance. They beat us by four or five goals last year."
Notre Dame meets Poplar Bluff on Friday in the Noon Optimist Spring Classic at the Notre Dame Sports Complex.
