The St. Vincent football team got its season off to an impressive start Friday night, routing visiting Sumner 45-22.
St. Vincent built a 31-8 halftime lead and rolled against the St. Louis squad.
"We played really well. I was very pleased with the way we came out and played," St. Vincent coach Paul Sauer said. "We played all four quarters and were able to get a lot of younger kids in the game."
Senior quarterback Trent Elder, who played wide receiver last year, showed that he should be fine running the Indians' offense.
Elder completed 16 of 20 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once.
"It was a really good start for him," Sauer said.
Elder fired touchdown passes of 49 yards to Kevin Mattingly, 31 yards to Trenton Gremaud and 21 yards to Jesse Francis.
Alex Winkler rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns, from 2, 4 and 6 yards out. He added 44 yards on three receptions.
Mattingly caught seven passes for 104 yards. Francis totaled 46 yards on three receptions.
"We spread the ball around well and had a balanced offense," Sauer said. "And our defense played well."
St. Vincent had 436 yards of total offense, 234 passing and 202 rushing. The Indians held Sumner to 220 total yards.
The Indians' defense forced six turnovers. Francis intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. Dylan Richardet had St. Vincent's other interception.
"We allowed a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and our JV defense gave up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter," Sauer said. "There were a lot of things to build on. Hopefully we can correct the mistakes we did make."
