CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The floppy-haired quarterback at St. Vincent is gone, courtesy of C.J. Pavlovsky.

The Indians' running back shaved Tim Schumer's head in preparation for districts.

"About six of us did it for districts," Pavlovsky said. "We went over to my house one night. So the floppy-haired quarterback over here, we cut it all off."

The more aerodynamic Schumer looked like a different player against Chaffee in Friday's Class 1 District 1 opener. The sophomore threw for two touchdowns and ran for a pair in the Indians' 40-12 victory.

"You see the maturity in him," St. Vincent coach Paul Sauer said of Schumer. "You see him looking for things and taking what the defense gives you. That's all you can ask."

Schumer completed 4 of his 11 pass attempts for 126 yards and two scores, but he also threw four interceptions. Sauer chose to emphasize the positives of Schumer's performance Friday.

"He's going to throw some interceptions," Sauer said. "The great thing is it's a learning experience for him and he'll be back for a couple more years."

Schumer added a running aspect to his arsenal Friday. He'd gained seven yards rushing against Grandview in Week 6 and lost 10 yards on four carries against Crystal City in Week 5. But he made the most of his seven carries against the Red Devils, gaining 90 yards and scoring twice.

Sauer was most impressed with Schumer's first scoring run.

"The first one was strictly his call," Sauer said. "He saw the defense was giving us up the middle and he had told the center that if they did that defense again, he was going to tap him and they were going to run the sneak. On third-and-13, that's a gutsy call. The sophomore, I tip my hat to him. He knew what he was doing."

Pavlovsky enjoyed watching the play develop. Schumer took the snap and immediately bolted to the right of center Chase Davis.

"I was like, 'Please Tim, just do that. Go for it bud,'" Pavlovsky said. "He had a good run and broke a couple tackles there and took it to the house. It surprised some people."

The play definitely caught St. Vincent offensive lineman Dylan Geringer by surprise. Schumer was 10 yards down the field before Geringer realized what was happening.

"I thought he was going to throw the ball," Geringer said. "We were just waiting for a pass to get caught or anything. Then we saw Tim run down the field and we just ran after him. Had to keep up."

The Indians did give Schumer a little ribbing about the play because Chaffee's Dylan Pobst nearly caught Schumer short of the goal line.

"I was like, 'Tim, you better get on your horse buddy,'" Pavlovsky said. "But he got it so that was good."

Schumer said the called play was a pass to Kyle Rollet, but he saw three defenders covering Rollet so he decided he'd keep the ball and run with it. He didn't realize Pobst had gained ground on him as he raced toward the end zone.

"I was surprised no one had caught me," Schumer said.

St. Vincent enjoyed a successful night running the ball as it finished with 314 yards on 44 carries. Pavlovsky led the way with 138 yards on 21 rushes.

Geringer said the Indians' ability to throw the ball a little helped open running lanes.

"When we started completing passes, they started shooting out and giving us openings in the middle to run the ball," he said. "The backs did a good job, putting their heads down and ran through people."

The Indians used big plays to score against the Red Devils. Five of St. Vincent's six touchdown plays covered at least 15 yards and three of them covered at least 50 yards.

"We gave up some big plays on their half," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said. "They didn't do anything different from what we expected them to do.

"We'll do the right thing, we'll do the right then all of a sudden we'll be out of position for a play."

The Red Devils kept the district opener close in the early going. Pavlovsky scored on a 50-yard run early in the second quarter, but Chaffee responded. Quarterback Jordan Yahn hit Mike Rutherford for a 70-yard pass to the St. Vincent 5-yard line. Rutherford ran it in three plays later to even the score at 6-6.

Chaffee's problem was that the Indians scored on their next play from the line of scrimmage. Schumer lofted a pass to Rollet, who shook off a tackler at the Chaffee 45 and streaked down the sideline for an 86-yard touchdown reception. Rollet added another touchdown catch in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a pass in the back of the end zone for a 19-yard score.

"We felt like we had a good defender on him," Vickery said. "He made a couple good plays."

The Indians said they wanted to make a statement Friday as they now turn their attention to Portageville, which lost to Hayti 26-20 in overtime Friday.

"We were trying to get as many points as we could to show everybody that we could do it and not give up and not be easy," Geringer said. "It's always good to win big."

The Red Devils find themselves in a difficult situation since their last two games are on the road.

"I can't fault our kids' effort," Vickery said. "We don't give up. We don't quit. But eventually we have to make plays."
