The St. Vincent and Zalma boys teams and seven individuals advanced to the Class 1 state meet through the 26-team District 1 cross country meet Saturday at Jackson City Park.
St. Vincent and Zalma finished one-two in the boys team standings. The top two teams and top 15 individuals advanced to Saturday's state meet at the Oak Hills Golf Center at Hough Park in Jefferson City
Oak Ridge seniors Mckenzie Elam and Lexi Wunderlich led the way in the girls Class 1 race, with Elam crossing the line first with a time of 20 minutes, 58 seconds.
Wunderlich managed to catch an extra burst of speed down the final leg of the race to overtake Valle Catholic sophomore Sally Heil to finish in second place. Wunerlich finished four seconds ahead of Heil with a time of 21:34.
"I felt really good at the end of the race," Wunderlich said. "I managed to save some energy until that last leg, which is something I've been trying to improve on all season, and it obviously paid off today."
Sophomore Jamie Hodge of Delta also finished in the top 15, placing ninth in 23:21.
Oak Ridge freshman Maci Jo Schamburg. who finished third among Oak Ridge runners and 13th overall, punched the final ticket for local girls runners with a time of 23:59.
Oak Ridge finished third in the team standings, just missing an opportunity to advance to state. The Blue Jays finished three points behind second-place Valle Catholic, which finished with 43 points. Crystal City won with 37 points. Only the top two teams advanced to the state meet.
St. Vincent sophomore Isaac Baer improved on his personal-best time by a minute to finish second in the boys race in 18:14, helping the Indians to the team title. Indians sophomore John Lipe finished fourth in 18:18, while Zach Schumer (19:00), a junior, finished 11th.
"I improved my time significantly," Baer said. "I'm looking forward to state, but now time doesn't matter, it's all about placing."
Sophomore Alex Steinberg (18:34) paced Zalma with a seventh-place finish. His brother Jacob (18:35), and teammate Peyton Ford (18:41) were right behind him, crossing the line in eighth and ninth place respectively.
St. Vincent edged Zalma by a point in the team standings, winning with 58.
"Not many people have heard of us," Ford said. "It would be nice to let people know who we are."
Oak Ridge and Meadow Heights also had state qualifiers.
Senior Jake LeGrand of Oak Ridge finished in sixth place (18:29), while sophomore teammate Zackry Moore (19:02), finished 12th.
Meadow Heights' Chris Bollinger (18:43) finished 10th to qualify as did teammate Josh Wilfong (19:06) in 14th.
