St. Vincent's magical season which saw the Indians bring home their first football state title may be over, but the rewards are still coming in for the Perryville school.
The Indians placed five players on the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters all-state team released today. St. Vincent, 13-1, ranked No. 1 in the final Class 1 poll.
Senior tight end Danny Rellergert, senior kicker Kyle Kline and junior defensive lineman Waylon Richardet all made the first team. Rellergert finished with 27 receptions for 574 yards and seven touchdowns. Overall, Rellergert accounted for 40 percent of starting quarterback Alex Armbruster's completions.
Kline, with range well past 40 yards, finished with eight field goals. On kickoffs, Kline routinely got the ball into the end zone.
Richardet, this year's Southeast Missourian Player of the Year, led the Indians in tackles with 126. In the state championship game, Richardet had four tackles for loss. He ended the season with seven sacks. On offense, Richardet led the Indians with more than 900 yards rushing.
Mark Prost and Brian Buchheit, both seniors, made the second team. Prost, a massive 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, was one of the anchors for a strong offensive line for the Indians. Buchheit finished second on the team in tackles from the defensive line, finishing with 109 tackles and six sacks. Both Prost and Buchheit are two-time all-state players.
Two local senior running backs also were rewarded for strong seasons. Scott City running back Matt Schaefer made the second team in Class 2 after rushing for 1,577 yards and 18 touchdowns. In addition to rushing for more than 100 yards in all 10 games for the 8-2 Rams, Schaefer had nearly 300 yards receiving, .
In Class 3, Perryville running back Matt Unterreiner also made the second team. Unterreiner rushed for 1,494 yards and 15 touchdowns. After a slow start, Perryville came back to win Class 3 District 1 with the help of Unterreiner's strong running. Unterreiner also had a punt return and kickoff return for a touchdown this season.
The SEMO Conference was well represented on the all-state list as well. Caruthersville (12-1), a semifinal team the past two seasons, had five players make the cut. Running back Adam Cecil, the Carr Trophy winner as the SEMO Conference's top player, and receiver Plessie Ellitt each made the first team. Offensive lineman Keith Floyd, defensive lineman Tyler Fullhart and receiver Kyle Hubbard made the second team.
Defensive lineman Antonio Robinson of Hayti was selected as a first team member in Class 1, and Charleston defensive back Justin Clark made the first team in Class 2. Tight end Derek Roberts and offensive lineman B.J. Grimes of Dexter made the second team in Class 3.
The all-state list for Classes 4-6 will be released on Wednesday.
