For Chaffee football coach Charlie Vickery, there was a simple explanation for his team's lopsided 41-0 loss to St. Pius on Friday night.
"We just didn't have much offense and we didn't play very good defense, to be honest," Vickery said in a phone interview after the game.
The visiting Red Devils were held to 92 yards of offense while St. Pius gained 397 yards.
"We absolutely played the worst game that we've played in I don't know how long," Vickery said. "We didn't play well in any aspect."
St. Pius rushed 46 times for 277 yards and threw the ball 13 times, completing eight passes for a total of 120 yards.
Chaffee rushed 18 times for 49 yards. Jordan Yahn gained 24 yards on seven carries and Daniel Lawson gained 16 yards on five carries.
Yahn, the Red Devils' sophomore quarterback, completed 7 of 18 passes for 43 yards.
Mike Rutherford caught three of those passes for 15 yards and Trevor Cannon made two catches for 23 yards.
"We just have to regroup," Vickery said. "We're playing a lot of sophomores, but that's no excuse."
Vickery noted that his team's subpar performance came against an opponent outside of its conference and said he expects a much better performance next week against rival Scott City.
"They're going to bounce back," Vickery said. "It was just one of those nights where nothing went our way, but you've got to make your own breaks."
