ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals selected right-handed pitcher Juan Mateo in the opening round of the Major League phase of baseball's Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.
Mateo, 22, was 10-5 with a 3.21 ERA in 32 games, including 16 starts, for the Chicago Cubs affiliate, Daytona of the Florida State League, in 2005. His 123 strikeouts ranked eighth in the league. He walked just 27 batters.
The Cardinals also claimed catcher Ikar Franco from the Atlanta Braves and infielder Vince Harrison from the Boston Red Sox in the Class AAA portion of the Rule 5 Draft. Both were assigned to Class AAA Memphis.
